Every Fluid Has a Service Life
Engine oil gets the attention, but transmission fluid, brake fluid, coolant, power steering fluid, differential fluid and transfer case fluid all degrade with time, heat and use. Brake fluid is hygroscopic, meaning it absorbs moisture from the air, which lowers its boiling point and promotes internal corrosion. Coolant loses the corrosion inhibitors that protect the cooling system. Gear oils shear down and lose their protective film strength.
